Several women echoed Gail’s perception of both subtle and overt criticism from other women if they were childless, either by choice or chance. Some expressed feelings of being blamed for infertility when they deliberately delayed pregnancy for career or other reasons. “It was like other women felt I deserved to have problems, since I didn’t have kids right away like they did,” said one mother who had a difficult time conceiving in her mid-thirties.

The next story shows another side of motherhood aggression.

Sugar and Spite

ANONYMOUS IN PENNSYLVANIA

I feel very strongly that relational aggression is very prevalent among adult women. I have personally experienced and witnessed bullying in the Parent Teacher Organization.

In my children’s school is a woman who volunteered her time within the PTO in various aspects. She was friends with another woman, who had been asked to step down due to conflicts she created. These two women in turn looked for anything to complain about regarding the participation of others in the PTO. They talked behind people’s backs. They complained about how others were running programs. They would not call parents who had volunteered to help with the programs they were chairing, claiming they didn’t need any help. The rest of the board disagreed with this perspective, but they continued to bring up the PTO bylaws and rules and regulations, creating tension and lengthy meetings. They spoke to some people and snubbed others.
